1914: The Twilight of the Empires
The world stood on the brink of catastrophe in the long, hot summer of 1914. Decades of imperial rivalry, nationalist fervor, and diplomatic miscalculations erupted into a conflict unlike any before it. The First World War cost millions of lives, shattered empires, redrew maps, and shaped the modern age in ways we still feel today.
This lecture series delves into the turbulent origins of the war, the fateful decisions that led to its outbreak, and the dramatic opening battles that set Europe ablaze. From the halls of power in Vienna, Berlin, and London to the bloody battlefields of France and Poland, we will explore the collapse of an old order and the dawn of a new, uncertain world.
Join Dr Spencer Jones for a journey of history’s great turning points and consider what lessons the disasters of 1914 hold for us today.
