What is Next in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Mental Illness?
Wednesday, April 22, 9:00 – 10:00 AM
Georgetown Public Library Hewlett Room
In Person
Unlike many illnesses diagnosed through objective testing, mental illness has long challenged medical professionals due to its constellation of subjective symptoms, which are often not exclusive to psychiatric causes. Ongoing discoveries in neuroscience, genomics, and environmental research—including the gut microbiome, trauma, and social conditions—continue to shape our understanding of mental health. The American Psychiatric Association has recently announced plans to revise its diagnostic “bible” accordingly. This presentation will explore the future of mental health diagnosis, as well as emerging and innovative treatment approaches.
Cindy Diamond, PhD, RN, earned her doctorate in nursing from UT Austin and a master’s degree in psychiatric mental health (PMH) nursing from Wayne State University. She is a board-certified PMH nurse. Dr. Diamond has served as a clinical nurse specialist, providing care for individuals with serious mental illness, as well as the director of several psychiatric programs and a faculty member in PMH nursing. Though mostly retired, she continues to teach in the doctoral program at UT Arlington and in PMH nursing clinicals at Texas State University.

Have you ever wondered how helicopters actually fly? Bob Otto does—and in this presentation, he will explain the mechanics of helicopter flight while also exploring the various aircraft used during the Vietnam War and how they were deployed. Drawing from his personal experience as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, Bob will share firsthand insights and reflect on how his perspectives evolved over the course of his service.
Bob Otto enlisted in the U.S. Army on November 4, 1968, and graduated from Artillery Officer Candidate School in September 1969. He completed Rotary Wing Flight School in August 1970 and deployed to Vietnam the following month. While in Vietnam, he served with the 135th Assault Helicopter Company until April 1971, when he transitioned to Battalion Headquarters as an Operations Officer. He returned to the United States in September 1971 and was honorably discharged in March 1972.
